Chana Dal is coming from black chickpeas or kala chana that have been split in two and then polished to remove the skin. In India, dal always refers to a split lentil, pea, chickpea or bean. Chana Dal is having a nutty flavor.
Chana Dal is called by different names across India and Asia. In Bengali, chana dal is called chholar dal. In Marathi, chana dal is called harbara dal. Also called horse gram.

How to cook Chana Dal?
1. Soak 1 cups of Chana Dal in water for minimum 3 hours.
2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked Chana Dal, 4 cups of water, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp black pepper, 1tbsp turmeric, 1/2 tsp red chilli powder, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tbsp oil/ghee, a pinch of hing/asafoetida.
3. Pressure cook for 3 whistles.
